The Lens of Deception

“Smile for the camera.” Click. I just showed my teeth. My smile that makes people think that I’m happy. I love how people think that, but I’m actually not. My relative died. Click. He saw it. My dog ran away. Click. He took a picture. I injured my leg. Click. The camera’s there. He’s always there. Click. It’s so ironic. All the lies. None of it’s true. “Smile.” The one word that has the control to make me fake my personality, but deep inside, I’m really crying. None of it is true. Camera. How do you do it? How do you make me lie? It’s a mystery. Are you a magician? You with your smooth hands, with bony fingers waving the wand around. “Alakazam.” Click. You with your black shiny glasses which your eyes hide behind. Have I ever seen your eyes? I know you’ve seen mine. Click. You with your mouth and your warm smile that illuminates that room, the one that opens and says, “smile” and makes me follow your command. Click. I smiled what now? Will you grant my wishes? Will you make me happy, or will I still be hiding behind the lies? Click.
